National Hygiene Promotion Strategy

The National Hygiene Promotion Strategy (Revised and Updated Edition 2024) is a comprehensive policy framework developed by the Government of Bangladesh to promote improved hygiene practices within the water supply and sanitation (WASH) sector and beyond. It provides strategic direction to enhance public health outcomes through behavior change, strengthened service delivery, and improved access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities.

The strategy adopts a multi-sectoral approach, engaging government institutions, local authorities, development partners, NGOs, and communities to ensure coordinated and effective implementation. It emphasizes the integration of hygiene promotion across key sectors such as health, education, disaster management, and urban services. Core focus areas include handwashing with soap at critical times, menstrual hygiene management, safe sanitation practices, food hygiene, and environmental cleanliness, all of which are essential for preventing disease transmission and improving overall well-being.

Aligned with the targets of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6.2, the strategy aims to ensure equitable access to hygiene services for all, with particular attention to women, children, and vulnerable populations. It also highlights the importance of social and behavioral change communication (SBCC), capacity building, research and innovation, and the development of enabling environments to sustain long-term hygiene practices.

Furthermore, the strategy outlines institutional roles and coordination mechanisms, monitoring and evaluation systems, and an implementation roadmap to support evidence-based planning and decision-making. By promoting an integrated and inclusive approach, the strategy contributes to reducing water- and sanitation-related diseases, strengthening resilience to public health risks (including pandemics and climate impacts), and advancing sustainable development in Bangladesh.
