The JMP and the UN-Water Global Analysis and Assessment of Sanitation and Drinking-Water (GLAAS: http://glaas.who.int/) are responsible for monitoring of drinking water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) including for SDG targets 6.1 and 6.2 (JMP) and 6.a and 6.b (GLAAS). Together, the JMP and GLAAS teams have launched a two-year project to identify indicators for monitoring ‘climate resilient water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH)’ at the global level, to support progressive integration of information on climate resilience into national and global frameworks for monitoring WASH.

This discussion paper is an output of the ongoing project on Indicators, Measures and Methods for Monitoring Climate-Resilient WASH. Its purpose is to:

  • summarize key concepts used in the WASH sector when framing climate resilience for the purposes of monitoring;
  • summarize key concepts drawn from resources used to conceptualise and monitor climate resilience in other WASH-adjacent sectors;
  • present a review of evidence supporting indicators of climate-resilient WASH that are being used or proposed for the WASH sector; and
  • reflect on the implications of the above for development of new indicators for the WASH sector.

This paper contributes to the development of a long list of candidate indicators which will be prioritized into a short list through consultations with the technical working group and the public.
