ITN-BUET advocated modern technologies and inclusion at Toilet Conference 2025

ITN-BUET jointly organized the Toilet Conference 2025 with WaterAid Bangladesh, UNICEF Bangladesh, and SNV. The conference was held at the InterContinental Dhaka, Bangladesh, from February 25 to 26, 2025. There were 4 dedicated Plenary Sessions with prominent experts in the specialized fields as keynote speakers, including 13 technical sessions and 6 oral presentation sessions where a total of 32 research papers were presented.

The session, chaired by Prof. Dr. Rowshan Mamtaz, Director of ITN-BUET, highlighted the need for climate-smart sanitation solutions. Prof. Mamtaz stressed that while addressing emissions is essential, the primary goal of sanitation systems should remain focused on public health, ensuring access to safe sanitation for all, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

Nepal-Bangladesh mentor city exchange program - building bridges for better sanitation

The Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) approach was introduced as a paradigm shift in sanitation to tackle sanitation issues stemming from population growth and rapid urbanization. Currently, CWIS is being implemented in over 30 countries, with a significant focus on South Asia. Project entitled “Citywide Inclusive Sanitation Scaling and Sanitation Innovation” primarily funded by BMGF, are being implemented in Nepal and Bangladesh respectively for the advancement of the CWIS.

Accelerating change in ensuring sanitation in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has made remarkable progress in ensuring access to basic sanitation coverage. Over the last two decades, open defecation has decreased from 34 percent to nearly zero, and possessing a toilet has become a status symbol. Yet, according to JMP estimates for 2020, 75.4 million people in Bangladesh still do not have a decent toilet of their own. Furthermore, climate change impacts such as flood, drought and rising sea levels are projected to further jeopardise the functionality of the existing sanitation systems i.e., toilets, septic tanks.
